Facilities
Everyone can relax in spacious, comfortable rooms.
All, except one of the bedrooms are en-suite. They are decorated simply and tastefully with the use of colour to define door frames. This helps the Dementia residents find their way around the home. Each person is encouraged to personalise their bedroom and make it their ‘home’ with their own belongings, including pictures and items of furniture. There is clear signage on each bedroom door to guide both the resident and visitor. Each bedroom has a 24 hour call bell system.
There is a passenger lift for easy access over the two floors and the home is wheelchair friendly with coloured handrails and clear signs throughout, to promote independent mobility.
Residents can choose between two lounges and a large conservatory where they can relax and socialise. The day areas have recently been redecorated to create a very homely environment with lots of reminiscence memorabilia, including wonderful photographs of the film stars of the fifties, and lots of old pictures of food advertisements and posters. Residents can sit quietly and listen to music including all the old favourites for example Vera Lynn and Glen Miller, or sit in one of the other sitting rooms reading or watching television, or taking part in an organised activitiy.
Every week there is a full programme of activities. We encourage daily life activities, such as helping to prepare the vegetables for lunch, or polishing cutlery and folding napkins or even hanging the washing on the line. Some residents enjoy helping with the baking for afternoon tea or for the more green-fingered residents, gardening in the raised beds. Some residents enjoy painting and art, or card making, digital photograpghy and computer and internet sessions, while others prefer a hand massage and a manicure.
We have recently created a shop for the residents to use so they can choose their own toiletries and treats. Sweets can be purchased in candy striped bags after being weighed out on a pair of old fashioned scales. We also have lots of choice of chocolates as well as greeting cards. The shop is proving to be a very popular outing!
We offer hairdressing for all our residents in our lovely new salon, once a week. We employ a Physiotherapist who visits Thornfield twice a week and works with the residents either in group sessions or on a one-to-one basis. Bowen Therapy takes place once a month. Cannon Care Homes also employ an Aromatherapist who works at Thornfield four days a month and works very closely with the Physiotherapist so they can work together on the individual needs of each resident. A Chiropodist comes once every six weeks. Residents can also be taken into Seaton to see their optician or dentist. In house appointments can be made if required.
We also have a musician who works one day a week at Thornfield. She spends the day developing musical activities with our residents, including group performances, sing songs and one-to-one sessions. At other times she sits and plays relaxing music on the piano for our residents to enjoy.
Once a week the Cannon Care Home minibus takes our more adventurous residents out on visits to local places of interest, and when the weather permits, longer outings are planned.
For those residents unable to attend a Sunday Service in Seaton we hold a service at Thornfield once a month.
